Jane Phillips's love is landscape painting. She works spontaneously to capture a spirit of place, light and colour. Her main influences are Turner and the Impressionists, particularly Bonnard; and at the other extreme, Ben Nicholson, with the dynamics of his receding plains on a flat landscape.

She lives in Somerset and the Corbieres, South West France and likes to travel and paint as often as possible. She works primarily in oils, with some pastels and watercolours. She draws extensively and combines this with her other love of life drawing and painting the human figure. The movement and line in figure drawing is to her like the bones of the landscape coming alive.

Jane began her life as a teacher and painter in the early eighties, with private commissions of large cityscapes to capture the skyline and landscape of the Docklands area before it changed irretrievably and also portrait commissions. She combined this with teaching children in Primary school and then as Head of Art in a London Boy‘s Prep School. Followed by starting up her own ‘Children‘s Art School‘ to give London children more art than school could offer, in the evenings, weekends and holidays. This dovetailed with tutoring children, both high flyers for entry to St Paul's and other London schools and those with learning problems, to open up their sense of imagery, which in turn became the catalyst for their scholastic achievement.

These experiences now give a sense of purpose to travelling and painting in different countries, with different cultures and she would like it to lead to painting and helping communities by raising their profile in exhibitions and supporting on-going projects in villages.
